Photo: Xavier Egoavil, seen with his family at Rachel Jewelers, was shot four times during the fatal robbery at the Kearny shop yesterday.

The Kearny man killed during a robbery at his jewelry store yesterday morning was shot four times, including one bullet to the forehead, according to the preliminary autopsy report.

"This is evidence of wanton violence on the part of the gunman, which indicates purposeful conduct," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said about the autopsy report on Xavier Egoavil, 48, of Quincy Avenue, who was killed inside Rachel Jewelers on Kearny Avenue at around 8:45 a.m.

One bullet entered Egoavil's left forehead and exited the back of his head, while another round entered his right upper back and exited his chest, DeFazio said.

A third bullet wound was to his right thigh and a grazing wound was to his right chest, the prosecutor said.

Egoavil and his mother were in the store located across from Town Hall and near Grove Street when two men entered, one of them armed with a semiautomatic handgun, DeFazio said. A struggle ensued between Egoavil and one of the gunmen and he was shot multiple times, DeFazio said.

The robbers then looted two display cases containing various types of jewelry worth thousands of dollars, DeFazio said.

They fled on foot to Maple Street, where a getaway car and driver were waiting, reports said.

"Any participant in this crime would be subject to a charge of felony murder, and that would include the driver of the getaway car," DeFazio said. "All the facts and circumstances would have to be evaluated concerning the charges against the individuals involved."

Egoavil and his wife Gina have two children, Xavier, 10, and Ivana, 6.

The robbery was captured on the jewelry store's security video system, DeFazio said.

Various other security cameras also captured aspects of what happened, including one in the area of the getaway car.

The car is described as a green four-door sedan with a BMW-type body, DeFazio said, adding that it was dirty, and had chrome wheels and tinted windows.

Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Kearny jeweler is shot 2 grab loot, get away

KEARNY - As his mother watched in horror, a 48-year-old Kearny jeweler was shot dead during a struggle with a gunman in a brazen morning robbery at their store in a small strip mall on Kearny Avenue across from Town Hall.

The two gunmen fled on foot and escaped in a waiting green getaway car parked nearby.

Police identified the victim as Xavier Egoavil, 48, of Quincy Avenue, who was killed inside Rachel Jewelers, located near Grove Street.

"This was not only a tragic event but it was incredibly brazen," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

It occurred shortly before 9 a.m., while the victim's father was a few doors away buying his morning coffee.

Two men entered the store, one of them armed with a semiautomatic handgun, DeFazio said, adding that a struggle ensued between Egoavil and the gunman.

Egoavil was shot multiple times in the torso.

The two men then looted two display cases containing various types of jewelry worth at least thousands of dollars, DeFazio said. The men fled on foot to Maple Street, where a getaway car and driver were waiting and sped them away, reports said.

"There was a lot of blood and you could see he was dead," said Olivia Sousa, the owner of Arcos Pastries, located a few doors from the jewelry store.

"There was so much blood everywhere," said Sousa, adding that Egoavil had been shot twice in the left shoulder and once in the stomach.

Sousa said one of her customers ran into her pastry shop screaming for help and saying the jewelry store was robbed and Egoavil was lying on the floor.

Egoavil's father was in the pastry shop buying coffee at the time.

He and Sousa ran to the murder scene, where they joined Egoavil's mother, who had been inside the store when her son was killed.

"The mother and father were in shock, they were paralyzed," said Sousa of Raquel and Honorio Egoavil. The victim's parents were driven home by police.

Xavier Egoavil and his wife Gina have two children, Xavier, 10, and Ivana, 6.

"I know those people the whole time I'm here," said Sousa, who has been in business for 11 years. "They are very nice people. Every day they come in here."

DeFazio said the robbery was captured on the jewelry store's security video system. Various other security cameras captured aspects of what happened, he said, adding the camera in front of Sousa's business captured images of the men entering the jewelry store.

DeFazio said there was a security camera near the getaway car as well.

"We are hoping that the car was picked up on video," said DeFazio, whose investigators are reviewing the tapes.

The getaway car was described as a green four-door sedan with a BMW-type body, DeFazio said, adding that the car was dirty, had chrome wheels and tinted windows.

The two robbers were described as being white, one of them with an olive complexion, DeFazio said.

Investigators remained on the scene yesterday afternoon and police tape continued to cut off access to several stores, including the jewelry store, where a police officer was posted at the door. Investigators draped plastic yellow sheets in the jewelry store windows to obscure the view.

Anyone with information on the murder and robbery is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.
